Fundamental of Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)

(FREE 4 day workshop)

This course provides foundational knowledge of the devices, equipment, and methods used to manage and regulate both vehicular and non-vehicular traffic. It covers the procedures and practices for ensuring safety and efficiency on Federal, State, County, Municipal, and Local roadways. While traffic controls are generally consistent, special considerations are required during construction. Civil Engineering students specializing in design or construction will gain a solid understanding of traffic control principles.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLO):

Upon successful course completion, students will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of developing and maintaining a uniform method as outlined in the MUTCD.
  • Analyze and interpret data related to issues in design, construction, and maintenance that require the use of the MUTCD.
  • Perform basic calculations and apply rules of thumb for installing and providing traffic control devices.
  • Apply critical thinking and quantitative reasoning to basic engineering projects.
  • Identify locations and situations for the application of traffic control devices in engineering projects using hypothetical conditions.
