Hudson County Community College to Welcome ‘The Walk of Immigrants’ Photojournalist Saul Flores this Wednesday

October 15, 2019, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) kicks off its 2019-2020 “Speaker’s Series” featuring the acclaimed photojournalist and philanthropist Saul Flores. Mr. Flores’ appearance will take place on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 3:30 p.m. at the HCCC Culinary Conference Center, which is located at 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City. The event is open to the entire community and there is no charge for admission.
Saul Flores grew up an undocumented immigrant in Brooklyn, NY. As a child he learned English with his sister, and helped his mother scrub penthouse suites in Manhattan. The first in his family to graduate high school, he received numerous college scholarships. In 2010, he chose to walk in the footsteps of immigrants coming to the United States for his senior service project at North Carolina State University. He has related that this choice was largely inspired by his parents’ sacrifices and hard work.
In “The Walk of Immigrants” presentation Mr. Flores shares details of his three-month, 5,328-mile walk from Ecuador to Charlotte, North Carolina. He made the grueling and treacherous journey to document what immigrants face in attempting to enter the United States. During the journey he snapped 20,000 photographs, capturing the essence of the people, communities and cultures he encountered. Many of the images will be included in the visual presentation of his talk.
Mr. Flores has been featured on National Public Radio, MSNBC, and TEDX. He speaks at universities, inspiring audiences through his visual storytelling, in which he helps people realize the capacity of their immense potential in times of extreme adversity.
