Dr. Caruana is dedicated to the well-being of her students and their focus on achieving academic success. Her involvement in the College community covers a myriad of initiatives that strive to build a sense of unity and purpose across Departments and Divisions. She is currently the Chair of the HCCC All College Council (ACC) Development and Planning Committee, previously served as Vice President of the ACC. With the Development and Planning Committee, she created the JVG (Johanna van Gendt) Scholarship that provides financial assistance to ESL students. She is also part of the Achieving the Dream (ATD) Core Strategy group and the How Team for ESL.
Before working at HCCC, she taught English to young adults in Italy, and to college students at Bilkent University in Turkey. In New Jersey, she taught Honors Italian to middle and high school students, and ESL at several community colleges and universities.
Together with Maria Schirta, Dr. Caruana is the co-editor/publisher of Diversity, the magazine for ESL writers.
