Biography
Sylvia supervises and directs student financial aid and scholarship programs at a college. This includes maintaining federal and state requirements, developing and modifying policies and procedures, planning and conducting initiatives to raise financial aid awareness, supervising staff, and ensuring staff training and compliance on regulatory issues. Additionally, Sylvia is responsible for maintaining the Title IV Participation Agreement, developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal and state law, and implementing process improvement systems related to student financial assistance operations.
Sylvia Mendoza currently serves as the Dean of Financial Aid, bringing over 20 years of experience to the role. She began her financial aid journey in 2003 as a financial advisor, and quickly established herself as an expert in the field by focusing on providing technology skills and support to students and their families. Her comprehensive understanding of financial aid regulations, policies, and procedures has contributed significantly to the college's compliance with these standards. The National Association of Student Financial Administrators (NASFA) has recognized Sylvia's proficiency in the financial aid sector by awarding her the prestigious FAAC (Certified Financial Aid Administrator) designation. This certification honors professionals with exceptional skills and knowledge in providing financial aid at postsecondary institutions nationwide. Sylvia has received various accolades, including the NJASFAA William G. Murphy President's Award, the NASFAA Credential Earners Honor Roll, The SunGard Technology Award, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and the HCCC Foundation Courtesy Award. Under Sylvia's leadership, the Financial Aid Office has made significant progress in streamlining financial aid processing times, adopting innovative tools, and expanding financial literacy programs for students and their families. As an active and engaged member of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and the Regional Association, Sylvia's collaborative approach allows her to share her extensive knowledge and experience with peers on topics such as financial aid best practices, compliance, and student support strategies. She has also participated in The Department of Education Federal Student Aid Usability Review for building effective federal aid tools and resources projects. Sylvia's ultimate goal is to open doors to educational opportunities and help students navigate the often-complex financial aid process to overcome financial barriers.
