This is an introductory course to American Sign Language as it is used within the American Deaf community, as well as an introduction to Deaf Culture and History. The class will emphasize non-verbal communication as students learn basic vocabulary, sentence structure, facial expressions, signing parameters, and other grammatical markers.

Students will start to build basic expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language that will be reinforced by various activities. Explore the richness of ASL grammar, vocabulary, and cultural context while honing your receptive and expressive skills. From mastering basic finger-spelling to engaging in simple conversations, you will gain the proficiency to communicate effectively with individuals who use ASL.

Conversational American Sign Language

Welcome to our engaging course designed to take your American Sign Language (ASL) skills to the next level. Conversational American Sign Language is an intermediate-level course designed for students who have completed an ASL beginner course, have a basic understanding of ASL, and want to continue improving their skills. This course will focus on honing your ability to engage in meaningful conversations using ASL, expanding vocabulary, refining grammatical structures, and enhancing expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language. You will build upon your foundation and develop the confidence and proficiency to express yourself fluently in sign language through interactive lessons, real-life scenarios, and practical exercises.

Our online course with weekly instructional support offers a dynamic and interactive learning experience. You will have access to Canvas, a Learning Management System with a structured curriculum with engaging lessons, multimedia resources, and practical exercises. But what sets this course apart is the personalized guidance received with dedicated sessions with our experienced instructor.   • Expand upon different sentence structures (statements, wh-questions, yes/no questions, negation).
  • Expand upon the beginning level of mastery of receptive and expressive fingerspelling (including clarity, rhythm, speed, and smooth execution of letter shapes), and expand on their understanding of when to use and when to avoid fingerspelling.
  • Continue development of one's receptive abilities.
  • Continue development of one's expressive abilities.
  • Engage in everyday conversational topics.
  • Expand one's knowledge of Deaf culture and community as it pertains to language usage.
