Hudson County Community College Offers Spoken Word/Slam Poetry Workshop with Jersey City Slam Master

February 22, 2018

JERSEY CITY, N.J. / February 22, 2018 – It’s part Apollo Theater-style comedy, part hip-hop storytelling, and part dramatic poetry readings. If Spoken Word/Slam Poetry were a person, it could be poet Gil-Scott Heron, comedian Chris Rock, and hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur rolled into one creative force.

Spoken word poetry is a modern twist, combining storytelling, hip-hop, theater, comedy and political/social activism. Slam poetry takes it to a higher level – into competitive poetry and the heart of spoken word movement made popular by shows like HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, as well as Button Poetry and Slam Find’s YouTube channels.

The Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Spoken Word/Slam Poetry workshop with Jersey City Slam Master Mark Skrzypczak can help transform attendees into the next Slam Poetry superstars. Writers and performers – regardless of experience – are invited to dig out their notebooks of musings, observations, or lyrics, and turn their comedies, poetry, or social commentaries into art forms. The workshop includes a brief overview of poetry slam, writing prompts, performance exercises, in-class performance, and critique.

Tuition is $49 per person for two sessions, which will be held on Thursday, May 24 and May 31 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the HCCC Library Building, 71 Sip Ave., across from the PATH Transportation Center. Register by May 1 with code “HCCC” to receive an early bird 20% discount.

Future slam masters may register online at https://tinyurl.com/hcccslam, or by contacting Continuing Education at communityedFREEHUDSONCOUNTYCOMMUNITYCOLLEGE or calling 201-360-4224. Payment by credit card, money order, cash, or check is due at registration.
