Hudson County Community College Hosts a Sewing Bootcamp

Sewing Bootcamp

The bootcamp will be taught by sewing master Megan Avery.

March 14, 2019, Jersey City, NJ - Hudson County Community College (HCCC) has a unique opportunity for those who wish to expand their creative skills and expertise with a sewing bootcamp. Sewing master, Megan Avery will head all three sessions.

Megan has been running a successful sewing business, "M Avery Designs Sewing Studio" in Hoboken, NJ for over 14 years. Now more than ever, with computer and smartphone screens dominating everyday life, it’s essential to remind people what it’s like to make something from scratch, and the sooner we start the better. Imagine a garment you can touch, hold, and use—one you made yourself!—rather than something that exists only on a hard drive. The benefits of sewing—developing motor skills, learning responsibility, expressing creativity, and making decisions—foster a healthy sense of independence and appreciation.

This single-day workshop is designed to provide students with sewing skills through three sessions:

  • Session 1 will be an introduction to the sewing machine and basic sewing. Learning to thread and operate the sewing machine properly, basic accessory construction, making straps, working with lining to eliminate raw edges, right side vs. wrong side of fabric, and working with interfacing.
  • Session 2 will be a review of machine and sewing. Mastery of threading and filling the bobbin on the sewing machine, introduction to sewing patterns, construction of wearable items, and adding pockets.
  • Session 3 will be following sewing tutorial instructions for project construction, basic clothing construction, inserting zipper, introduction to garment fit, and hemming basics.

The class, which is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10 from 6 to 8 p.m., will be held in the College’s Gabert Library at 71 Sip Avenue in Jersey City – adjacent from the Journal Square PATH Transportation Center. Space is limited, and the cost is $250 per person, with an optional $50 fabric pack available.
