Hudson County Community College Library Announces ‘Muslim Journeys’ Series

JERSEY CITY, N.J. / March 25, 2013 - The Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Library announced activities for its Muslim Journeys Series today. The College will host five events in April, including three at the College’s Main Campus in Journal Square, Jersey City and two at its North Hudson Higher Education Center in Union City.
The HCCC Library is hosting these events as part of the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys grant program, through which it was awarded a collection of 25 books, three films, and educational materials such as Oxford Islamic Studies Online by the National Endowment for the Humanities and American Library Association. Each activity is open to the College’s students, faculty, and staff, and to members of the general public to facilitate learning about the people, places, history, faith and cultures of Muslims in the United States and around the world.
The series will kick off with a lecture on Wednesday, April 3 titled Contemporary Muslim Art and presented by Dr. Beth Citron, Assistant Curator at the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art. Dr. Citron’s presentation will focus on Contemporary Muslim Art in India since the 1947 partition.
To encourage further learning about the history and influence of Islamic Art, the Rubin will host two guided tours of their collections in New York City on April 12 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The series continues with an April 18 film screening of Koran by Heart at the College’s North Hudson Higher Education Center, presented by the College’s Office of Student Activities, before concluding with two lecture/discussions led by HCCC Adjunct Professor Lisa Bellan-Boyer. Professor Bellan-Boyer will speak on The Diversity of Religious Experience in Islam on Tuesday, April 23 and A Magic Carpet Ride - Driven by the Arabian Nights on Wednesday, April 24.
All events are free and open to HCCC students, faculty, staff, and the general public, though each Rubin Museum Tour is limited to 30 participants, and advance ticket reservation is required.
