March 29, 2019, Jersey City, NJ – Popular talk and lifestyle television host Karamo Brown will be the featured speaker at the next session of the Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Lecture Series. Best known as the culture expert on the Emmy-winning Netflix reboot of Queer Eye, Mr. Brown will provide a firsthand account of his life and accomplishments.
The lecture will take place on Wednesday, April 10, at 1 p.m. in the College’s Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City – two blocks from the Journal Square PATH Transportation Center. There is no admission charge for the event, which is open to the entire community. Tickets are required and are available at https://hccclectureserieskaramobrown.eventbrite.com/.
Mr. Brown uses his education, experiences, and advocacy to achieve success and effect change. A graduate of Florida A&M University, he worked as a licensed social worker and psychotherapist for over a decade before transitioning into media.
Mr. Brown became the first openly gay African American in reality TV when he joined the cast of MTV's The Real World in 2004. A decade later, he joined the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) to host and produce their first digital show, #OWNShow, and has gone on to become host and producer for Huffington Post Live. He has also been a recurring guest host of Access Hollywood Live, a contributor to HLN/CNN, and host of MTV’s Are You the One: Second Chances.
As co-founder of 6in10.org, an organization addressing the mental health and self-esteem issues affected by HIV, Mr. Brown was honored with the 2018 Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award. He also worked with the Obama administration to create policy and legislation that supports LGBTQ youth and their allies after school hours. Mr. Brown became an active member of the Never Again MSD gun-control movement after the 2018 mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas, his Florida high school.
The annual HCCC Lecture Series is designed to educate, inspire and reflect the community’s diverse demographics, interests and viewpoints. Now in its 16th year, the series is hosted by the College’s Office of Student Activities and has featured luminaries from every industry and walk of life. Guest lecturers have included Cornel West, Ralph Nader, Julian Bond, Ruben Navarette, Edward James Olmos, America Ferrera, Giancarlo Esposito, BD Wong, Rita Moreno, Anne Burrell, and many others.
