James E. McGreevey Will Deliver Keynote Speech at Hudson County Community College’s Fundraiser for The Georgia Brooks Memorial Fund

April 23rd breakfast fundraiser part of the College's month-long Pridefest 2015 celebration; proceeds from the event will go to matching scholarships.
April 14, 2015, Jersey City, NJ – The Georgia Brooks Stonewall Celebration Project at Hudson County Community College (HCCC) is sponsoring a fundraising breakfast for 8 a.m. Thursday morning, April 23, 2015. The event will be held in the HCCC Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City – just two blocks from the Journal Square PATH Station.
James E. McGreevey, Director of Jersey City Employment & Training Program and former Governor of New Jersey, will deliver the keynote speech at the breakfast.
Tickets are available at a cost of $30.00 each for members of the community and for HCCC faculty and staff, and $15.00 each for HCCC students. Proceeds from the event will be utilized in providing s scholarships to deserving students, and will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Hudson County Community College Foundation.
The Georgia Brooks Memorial Fund is named in honor of Georgia Brooks, who passed away in November 2013. Ms. Brooks worked in the College’s Information Technology Services Department as an Academic Lab Manager for 25 years, and was an active advisor for the College’s Gay-Straight Alliance.
“Hudson County Community College is very proud of the diversity of the College and our community. That diversity goes far beyond ethnicity and race, and includes sexual preference,” said HCCC President Glen Gabert, Ph.D. “Georgia Brooks was an advocate in promoting understanding for our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and neighbors, and for working to ensure the dignity and equality of everyone.” Dr. Gabert said that the Memorial Fund is a fitting tribute to her work.
Throughout the month of April, the College’s Georgia Brooks Stonewall Project, and other HCCC campus organizations, have sponsored a variety of events, including: a workshop on the concepts of identity; trainings for faculty, students and staff about creating safe, comfortable and welcoming environments for those who may need a safe haven; a coffeehouse performance centering around Pride themes; a screening of the film, “The Kids Are Alright;” a Rainbow Book Fair; and roundtable discussions on issues and challenging stereotypes.
