May 16, 2017, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) will present the HCCC 2017 Heritage Award to Joseph D. Sansone for his lifetime service to the community. The award will be presented during the College’s 40th Annual Commencement ceremonies on Thursday, May 18, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at New Jersey Performing Art Center in Newark, NJ. Degrees will be conferred on approximately 1,129 students that evening.
The HCCC Heritage Award was instituted 24 years ago to honor members of the community who have made significant contributions to the College, its students, and families. Past recipients include: Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise; President of Lindenfelser Associates, Aerospace Consultants and former Kearny Mayor and Councilperson Kenneth H. Lindenfelser; SILVERMAN principal Paul Silverman; former HCCC Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Abegail Douglas-Johnson; Union City science teacher Nadia Makar; Pastor and Overseer of Mt. Sinai Full Baptist Church Mother Jacqueline Mays; United Way of Hudson County President Daniel Altilio; Hudson County business leader Raju Patel; retired Jersey Journal publisher Scott Ring; former New Jersey City University President Dr. Carlos Hernandez; and Director of District Redesign & Leadership at the Annenberg Institute for School Reform/Brown University Marla Ucelli.
Joseph D. Sansone is a lifelong resident of Hudson County. He attended Rutgers College and is a graduate of The American Institute of Banking. His career, which spans more than 50 years, began at First Jersey National Bank in Jersey City (which was later acquired by NatWest Bank), where he held senior positions in retail banking. Mr. Sansone worked for ChaseMellon Shareholder Services for several years as a Vice President of Correspondence and Lost Securities.
In 2001, Mr. Sansone joined Hudson County Community College as Executive Director of the College Foundation; he also serves Vice President for Development and Assistant to the President.
Mr. Sansone has been an active member of the Hudson County community since 1962. He is the current Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the Hudson Hospice;past President of the Rotary Club of Jersey City-Daybreak; past Chair of the American Conference on Diversity; past member of the Securities Information Center of the SEC Lost Securities Program - New York; Past Chair of the Institutional Advancement Affinity Group of the New Jersey Council of County Colleges; Trustee and member of Destination Jersey City; a past Board Member of the Northeast Jersey Bankers Association; past President of the West Hudson/South Bergen Optimist Club; former member of the Board of Trustees and Treasurer of the Pavonia Girl Scout Council; former Trustee of the Hoboken Salvation Army; and a past member of the Hoboken Kiwanis.
Mr. Sansone is the recipient of numerous awards recognizing his exemplary leadership and dedication to service in support of the community. These include Hudson Hospice “Man of the Year Award,” Christopher Columbus “Outstanding Community Service Award,” and the New Jersey Council of County Colleges “Spirit Award.”
“We are very proud to present this award to Joe,” said HCCC President Glen Gabert, Ph.D. “He has worked tirelessly with the HCCC Foundation Board members to secure the funding that has resulted in thousands of students being able to benefit not only from scholarships, but also from our cultural enrichment programs, the HCCC Foundation Permanent Art Collection, and much more.”
In hearing about being named for the award, Mr. Sansone said: “I would like to thank the Hudson County Community College Trustees and President Gabert for recognizing me with the 2017 Heritage Award. I would also like to thank the HCCC Foundation Board members for their dedication and hard work in aiding the students of Hudson County Community College.”
