Hudson County Community College Summer Youth and Teen Programs Offer Enrichment, Self-Discovery, SAT Prep

Department of Continuing Education classes set for July 15 – August 29.

 

June 19, 2019, Jersey City, NJ – Students enrolled in the Hudson County Community College (HCCC) summer enrichment and educational classes can make new friends, explore creative expression and polish their academic skills in preparation for college.

The HCCC Department of Continuing Education offers Summer Youth and Teen Programs for middle- and high-school students. Classes in Culinary Arts, Theater Arts, Dance, and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Prep offer students opportunities to learn valuable life skills, immerse themselves in the performing arts, and get a jump start on preparing for their higher education. The programs are presented in partnership with the College's Division of Academic Affairs, and the HCCC Culinary Arts Institute, as well as Speranza Theatre Company.

Exploring Digital Photography is open to those with or without experience who wish to improve their skills using their digital camera or a smart-phone camera. Exposure, color balance, composition, and studio lighting concepts will be investigated, as will close-up, landscape, and portrait shots. The program will conclude with a reception featuring students’ best works.
Dates: July 15 to 18, 2019. Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Cost: $235.00.

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Prep is an intensive test preparation program that teaches basic problem-solving skills to strengthen abilities and help avoid mistakes. The instructor will use test samples from an actual SAT exam. Students must purchase the required SAT book for the first day.
SAT Math Prep – Dates: July 29 to August 8, 2019. Time: 1 to 4 p.m.  Cost: $250.00.
SAT Language Prep – Dates: July 29 to August 8, 2019. Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Cost: $250.00.

Baking Academy at the College’s Culinary Arts Institute is where students learn to create pies, cookies, and muffins, as well as cake-baking, icing, decorating, piping, and other basics. In hands-on classes, students will learn the ins and outs of working in professional, state-of-the-art kitchens, including food safety and sanitation, ingredients pairings, and how to care for kitchen tools. The classes are recommended for students 9 to 15 years of age. Students must wear flat, closed-toed shoes; long hair must be pulled back and secured.
Baking Academy I – Dates: July 22 to 25, 2019. Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Cost: $289.00.
Baking Academy II – Dates: August 5 to 8, 2019. Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost: $289.00.

Cooking Academy students will gain knowledge of how to make it in the fast-paced and growing culinary and hospitality field, including working in professional, state-of-the-art kitchens. Hands-on learning includes food safety and sanitation, ingredients pairings, menu planning, caring for kitchen tools, and secrets of the trade. Recommended for students 9 to 15 years of age. Students must wear flat, closed-toed shoes; long hair must be pulled back and secured.
Cooking Academy I – Dates: July 29 to August 1, 2019. Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost: $289.00.
Cooking Academy II – Dates: August 12 to 15, 2019. Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost: $289.00.

The Theater: Acting, Playwriting, Stage Production program helps participants develop skills that will last a lifetime by creating, rehearsing, and performing a production in front of an audience. Guided by a professional director and playwright, students 7 to 13 years of age will gain an understanding of the basics of theatrical design, breaking down a script, creating a character, and using voice and body language to bring a script to life. Each activity builds on public speaking and teamwork skills.
First Play – Dates: August 19 to 22, 2019. Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost: $225.00.
Second Play – Dates: August 26 to 29, 2019. Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost: $225.00.
