August 28, 2017

Jersey City, NJ (August 28, 2017) – Just as the harvest season winds down this fall, the inaugural After the Harvest Wine & Food Event presented by Provident Bank will be launched at the Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Culinary Arts Institute, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City on Saturday, October 28 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Member wineries of the Garden State Wine Growers Association, the HCCC Culinary Arts Institute, and the Hudson County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development have teamed up for this new fall offering.

After the Harvest Wine & Food Event will feature wine samplings from at least six New Jersey wineries, as well as tastings, culinary pairings, wine tutorials and live music. The event is the first project of a new partnership between the Hudson County Community College Culinary Arts Institute and Garden State Wine Growers Association. Each $25 ticket entitles attendees to a wristband and a free wine glass, which may be picked up on the day of the event (proper ID required).  There is also a non-drinker ticket priced at $10. Tickets are available online at http://tinyurl.com/AfterTheHarvest. All attendees must be at least 21 years old and must be present in order to pick up their wristband.  There will be a maximum of 500 tickets sold for this event. Attendees will be admitted at 12.30 p.m., and wine tasting will begin at 1 p.m.

“We are very excited to launch this partnership with the Hudson County Community College Culinary Arts Institute, and to have Provident Bank as an event sponsor in bringing New Jersey wine to the Jersey City area,” said Tom Cosentino, Executive Director of the Garden State Wine Growers Association. “In partnering with the HCCC Culinary Arts Institute, we are producing a unique wine and culinary experience. We are also establishing a long-term relationship with the College and the Hudson County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development that will allow us to have our winemakers visit, make presentations on New Jersey wines, and to also have our products introduced to the great restauranteurs in the area.”

“New Jersey Wineries produce some wonderful wines. Having a chance to educate the public in an informative and enjoyable format is exciting for the Hudson County Community College Culinary Arts Institute,” said Dr. Eric Friedman, HCCC Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Garden State Wine Growers Association member wineries will offer samples on the second floor of the HCCC Culinary Conference Center from 1 p.m. to 6 pm., and attendees will be able to buy wine by the bottle and case while enjoying cheese, charcuterie and other finger foods.

Wine tutorials will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Hourly talks will feature topics such as the “Health Benefits of Drinking Wine,” “History of New Jersey Wine,” and the “Five S’s of Wine Tasting.” On the third floor, guests will be able to sample dishes paired with a wine from each of the participating wineries. There will also be an ice sculpture demonstration, musical entertainment, vendors and other refreshments.

New Jersey wines continue to achieve growing popularity and acclaim. New Jersey wines regularly win Best of Show, Double Gold and Gold Medals in such prestigious competitions as the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition, San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, Tasters Guild International Competition, Beverage Tasting Institute World Wine Championship and Indianapolis Wine Competition, among others.

The Garden State Wine Growers Association (GSWGA) is the statewide organization for the advocacy and promotion of the New Jersey wine industry. Founded in 1984, the association has driven exponential growth through wine education initiatives, cooperative marketing campaigns, and a slate of annual events that take wines across New Jersey, and encourage enthusiasts to visit New Jersey wineries. Composed of over 50 members, the GSWGA produces wine events and wine trail weekends in participating winery tasting rooms statewide. The events are designed to market locally produced wines of the Garden State.  The Association also addresses the legislative affairs and public relations of the state’s wine industry.
