HCCC Free Census Bureau Workshop a Boon to Businesses

Attendees can learn how to use Census tools for marketing, growth.
September 27, 2018, Jersey City, NJ – Small business owners know that finding, organizing, and analyzing market data can be the difference between profit and loss. The U.S. Census Bureau provides a wealth of data that can help businesses and organizations gain keen insight into their target customer, market, and competition.
The Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Center for Business and Industry will host a Census Bureau Workshop on Friday, September 28, 12 to 4 p.m. in the Culinary Conference Center at 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City (just two blocks from the Journal Square PATH Transportation Center). The workshop will be held in partnership with Hudson County Economic Development Corporation (HCEDC), Census Business Builder, and Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, with support from Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and the Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce, and the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey.
“This free workshop is an important example of how the College works with our partners in Hudson County and New Jersey to promote the economic growth of our area,” said Dr. Chris Reber, HCCC President. “In today’s economy data drives strategic decision making and this program will illustrate and demystify this process. It is also exciting to partner with HCEDC, the Hispanic, African American and Hudson Chambers of Commerce.”
Topics covered will include how to access and use demographic, business, and economic data with Census Business Builder (CBB), an innovative tool that presents data in a user-friendly, map-based interface. The CBB covers 49 industries and organizes information by zip code, town, and county. Other web tools that will be used for the workshop include: Small Business Edition, which helps develop a deeper understanding of targeted markets; and Regional Analyst Edition, which helps planners, governmental agencies, and chambers of commerce measure service areas and promote business growth.
Economist Andrew Hait will present the workshop. The Data Product and Data User Liaison in the International Trade Management Division at the U.S. Census Bureau, Mr. Hait holds a Bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University and a Master’s certificate from George Washington University. He has more than 30 years experience, advises on economic data products, and conducts user training for the Economic Census and the Bureau’s other economic survey programs. He also coordinates development of Census Business Builder.
