Hudson County Community College Offers ‘Developing Social Justice Workplace Competencies’ Certificate Program on Zoom

September 28, 2021, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) announces a new, four-course Social Justice Workplace Competencies Certificate Program specifically designed for criminal justice professionals and others who wish to strengthen agency-community partnerships and enhance their existing social justice skill set. The courses will be taught by law enforcement professionals live on ZOOM, Saturday mornings and weekday evenings, from October 2021 through February 2022.

The courses will assist participants in recognizing and addressing systemic inequities and helping improve the criminal justice sector through the inclusion of diverse perspectives that impact decision-making, affect policy, and promote positive change. Participants will also learn how to enhance their ability to cultivate mutual respect and build connections that assist in protecting and serving diverse communities.

“This certificate program supports the overarching goals of the HCCC President’s Advisory Council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (PACDEI), which are prominent in all we do at the College,” said HCCC President Dr. Christopher M. Reber. HCCC recently received the 2021 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, and been selected to receive the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) 2021 Equity Award for the Northeastern United States.

 

Developing Social Justice

 

While all four courses must be taken to qualify for the certificate, they may also be taken individually. The courses are:

  • “Historical Perspectives in the Criminal Justice System,” taught by Keith Stith, Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives (Retired) and Adjunct Instructor at
    HCCC and Monmouth University, on Saturdays, October 2, 9, 16, and 23, 2021,
    9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
  • “Race, Gender, and LGBTQ+ in Law Enforcement,” taught by Bob Dowd, North Bergen Police Department Chief of Police (Retired), Roberts & Associates, LLC Managing Partner, and
    New Jersey City University Adjunct Instructor, on Thursdays, October 28, and
    November 4, 11, and 18, 2021, 6 - 8 p.m.
  • “Social Justice: Reimagining Structures and Services,” taught by Keith Stith on Saturdays, January 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2022, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.; and
  • “Restorative Justice in America’s Criminal Justice System: A Social Justice Paradigm,” instructor to be named, on Tuesdays, February 1, 8, 15, and 22, 2022, 6 - 8 p.m.
