October 15, 2020, Jersey City, NJ – The Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Department of Cultural Affairs (DOCA) will celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion with a live virtual performance of “Letters from Anne and Martin” on Thursday, October 22, at 12:30 p.m. The event may be viewed on Webex, using access code 1322911845 and password 1234.
The HCCC President’s Advisory Council on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (PACDEI), in partnership with the Anne Frank Center USA, is presenting the event, which concludes a month-long presentation of virtual exhibition tours and live performances.
“Letters from Anne and Martin” is a unique, dramatic production that combines the iconic voices of Anne Frank and Martin Luther King, Jr., both of whom were born in 1929. Although they represent drastically different eras and cultures – the Holocaust and Civil Rights struggle – Anne Frank and Dr. King shared similar experiences of hatred and prejudice. Developed using excerpts of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl and Dr. King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” the production evokes the key messages from the legendary figures and their hopes and plans for a peaceful, unified world. Despite persecution – Anne Frank in Nazi-occupied Holland, and Dr. King in the Jim Crow South – the Jewish Holocaust diarist and the Black Civil Rights Movement leader believed in fairness and justice for all.
Following the performance, HCCC DOCA Director Michelle Vitale will host a 15-minute virtual tour of “Anne Frank: A Private Photo Album,” and exhibition of more than 50 of Otto Frank’s reproduced photographs, many of which are seldom publicly displayed. Otto Frank’s photographs had a single theme: his daughters, Anne and Margot. Mr. Frank used his Leica camera to snap his girls in familial settings at home, school, beachside, and more. Nothing in Mr. Frank’s photographs reveals the horrors the family would endure.
