HCCC and FDU Sign Agreement for Dual Admission to Construction Management Baccalaureate Degree Program

Affiliation opens the door to reduced tuition, mentoring, scholarships, and highly sustainable employment opportunities for HCCC students enrolled in this program.
November 19, 2018, Jersey City, NJ – Hudson County Community College (HCCC) and Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) have signed a dual-admission agreement that allows students to complete their Associate of Applied Science degree in Construction Management at HCCC and transition to the Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering Technology program at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU).
“The construction industry has become highly technical. Population increases, aging buildings and deteriorating infrastructure are generating unprecedented employment growth for construction managers with the knowledge and skill sets our combined programs offer,” said Dr. Chris Reber, HCCC President. “This affiliation with FDU makes exceptional benefits – reduced tuition, mentoring and scholarships – available to students while they are working on their bachelor’s degree.”
Under the terms of the dual admission agreement, students who are enrolled in the HCCC Construction Management Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program may apply to the FDU Construction Engineering Technology Baccalaureate program. Once students have completed their A.A.S. degree at HCCC, they will be granted 52 credits in the FDU Baccalaureate program. Students in the HCCC-FDU dual admission program are eligible for a 40% reduction in the FDU tuition rate upon completing their Associate’s degree. Merit scholarships and housing grants are also available to qualified students.
The HCCC Construction Management A.A.S. classes are held in the College’s new state-of-the-art Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Building. A lab dedicated to Construction Management is outfitted with cutting edge equipment generally found only in leading four-year colleges and universities. The HCCC coursework educates students about new construction methods, protocols, materials, testing procedures, codes, contracts, specifications, technical report writing, and cost estimation and management principles. The HCCC program also supports students in entering externship programs for hands-on experience.
The FDU Construction Engineering Technology B.S. program is one of just 25 programs in the United States accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc.). The FDU curriculum offers a 50/50 mix of theoretical and laboratory coursework and is most suitable for students who prefer hands-on applications and laboratory experiences. Program graduates work as contractors, field supervisors, project managers, job superintendents, estimators, safety specialists, schedulers, and examiners, with starting salaries of approximately $50,000.
FDU Construction Engineering Technology students are afforded unique opportunities such as observing various construction sites. FDU students may also join the Mechanical Contractor Association of America student chapter, which provides opportunities for mentoring, internships and job placement. Additionally, a summer employment program and $3,000 scholarship are offered through the Construction Industry Advancement Program of New Jersey.
