The Lampitt Law: A Comprehensive State-wide Transfer Agreement

In September 2008, New Jersey passed the Lampitt Law, which allows students to have a smooth transfer from a New Jersey community college to the New Jersey public four-year colleges and universities.

The Agreement provides for full transfer of the Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) degree credits for community college graduates if you plan to enroll in a similar major at the four-year college/university and, you have followed certain recommended guidelines as are posted on NJ Transfer.

Please note: The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) and the Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) degrees are not protected by this law.

When you graduate from HCCC with an AA or AS degree, you are not guaranteed admission to college by this law. However, if you are accepted to the four-year school, then this law respects and protects those degree credits which you earned, up to 1/2 of the coordinating bachelor’s degree. Generally, that means a transfer of 60 credits maximum. The law also instructs the four-year college/university to transfer the AA or AS degree credits to completely satisfy that college’s freshman and sophomore year core distribution. As a county college graduate, you should expect to enter the four-year school with junior status.

There are of course some exceptions; upper-division majors which lead to licensed fields, and majors which are accreditation by an outside agency are not bound by this agreement.
