Hudson County Community College’s (HCCC) Journal Square campus might not be where one would expect to find apiaries full of honeybees and students learning the ins and outs of beekeeping, but HCCC is one of the rare urban community colleges, as well as one of the few community colleges in New Jersey, to offer a course in beekeeping sciences.

Literacy is the cornerstone for lifelong learning and success, but New Jersey has fallen behind. Despite being fifth in the United States for adults who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, New Jersey has the fifth lowest literacy rate in the nation.

What makes an informed voter? How does one discuss social, economic, and political issues with people of different views? How can people with opposing ideologies work toward the common good? How do colleges balance the complexities of freedom of expression and open debate?

At a time when college enrollment numbers are facing significant pressures nationwide, Hudson County Community College (HCCC) is pioneering innovative solutions and turning the tide to meet students where they are, leading to increased year-over-year enrollment and a continuing upward trend in enrollment since the pandemic.
