Support for Student Parents

Hudson County Community College (HCCC) believes that education can change a family’s life for generations to come. We support our students who are parents and caretakers as they pursue higher education. In 2023, Generation Hope selected Hudson County Community College as one of five FamilyU Cohort of higher education institutions joining their FamilyU technical assistance program.

Generation Hope and FamilyU

FamilyU is a comprehensive, customized, evidence-based, two-year capacity-building experience designed to build and refine institutional competencies to improve the academic achievement of student parents. FamilyU equips higher education leaders at these selected institutions with the necessary tools, information, and coaching to make systemic changes to benefit students with parenting responsibilities. By exploring data, people, policies, and culture, and addressing the barriers and obstacles faced by student parents, FamilyU helps colleges and universities transform their campuses in ways that benefit all students.

Defining "Student Parents"

HCCC inclusively recognizes student parents as “a student who is a parent, guardian, or assumes caregiving responsibilities of any biological, adopted, step, or foster child(ren) living in their household part or full time. This includes pregnant and expecting students."

Introducing HCCC's Student Parent Fellow: Shanice Acevedo

Shanice Acevedo is a first-generation student parent majoring in psychology at Hudson County Community College (HCCC). Shanice brings a wealth of experience from her previous roles in customer service and training new employees within both the dental and medical fields. Her dedication to continuous learning is evident through her recent achievement of a certificate in mental health aid, showcasing her commitment to holistic patient care and passion in understanding and improving mental health. As a mother of two children, ages 12 and 7, she strives to set a powerful example for them, demonstrating that with determination and hard work, they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Shanice embodies the belief that it’s never too late to make dreams come true, balancing her career aspirations with her dedication to her family's success, and she is excited to bring this perspective to HCCC as their Student Parent Fellow.

HCCC's Partnership with NJCU's Children's Learning Center

HCCC students can access affordable childcare at NJCU. At NJCU, it's not just college students receiving an affordable world-class education—young children of university students, alumni, and employees receive the same at the University's fully licensed and accredited Children's Learning Center (CLC). The center consists of a Preschool and Pre-K classroom as well as drop-in childcare services—all at an extremely competitive cost to parents. In addition, the center serves as a training site for NJCU students. The Children's Learning Center provides a setting that supports NJCU students in their preprofessional field experience.
