The influence of Disney on American culture is a phenomenon that extends far beyond entertainment. From the iconic characters that have become cultural ambassadors to the groundbreaking theme parks and the acquisition of beloved franchises, Disney has woven itself into the fabric of American society.
This immersive weekend class, which will take place in two Walt Disney World Theme
Parks, offers a unique, on-the-ground
exploration of how Disney has shaped American culture, from its media and storytelling
to its impact on identity, values, and
consumer behavior.
Through a combination of discussions, guided tours and rides, and interactive sessions,
students will analyze Disney’s role in
shaping national narratives, the American Dream, and contemporary notions of race,
gender, and family. By exploring the magic of Disney’s storytelling across various
media and experiencing it in the context of the company’s flagship theme
park, students will critically evaluate how Disney’s cultural influence has evolved
and continues to impact global entertainment, tourism, and identity.
