Introduction to Traffic Diversion Study

(FREE 2 day workshop)

This course is designed to educate students and professionals on the fundamentals of developing Traffic Diversion Studies (TDS). TDS involves redirecting traffic to alternative routes due to construction, short-term, or long-term road closures. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the key steps involved in planning and executing TDS for construction-related projects. The course is concise, focused, and tailored to present complex processes in a clear and non-technical manner.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) Upon successful course completion, students will be able to:

  • Understand the basic fundamentals of Traffic Diversion Studies (TDS), including the needs and requirements of TDS (construction, maintenance, and emergency work), the difference between planned versus unplanned diversion of traffic, and the assessment of traffic impacts due to diversion.
  • Qualitatively evaluate existing roadways with and without additional traffic due to diversion, conduct qualitative assessments of commonly available software for evaluation and assessment, and perform qualitative analyses of various time periods during the day and their different traffic patterns.
  • Recommend mitigative measures and provide qualitative assessments of commonly available mitigation methods to address the impacts of diverted traffic.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) or consultant to develop TDS, working for a contractor or as an applicant for a work zone permit requiring TDS.

Schedule Lecture Topics

Orientation, course intent, schedule, interaction with students, and expectations from students

  • Introduction
  • Understanding traffic congestion: causes, responsibility, and whether it can be eliminated. Discuss types of trips and purposes, and whether they can be eliminated. Examine dependence on vehicles, buses, and other mass transit vehicles. Consider the impacts of traffic incidents during congestion.
  • Roadway closures and diversion: The need to divert traffic to adjacent roadways. Differences between temporary, long-term, and permanent closures. Basics and fundamentals of TDS.
  • Fundamentals of TDS: Definition of a Traffic Diversion Study, reasons for and consequences of not completing a TDS. Discussion of planned versus unplanned diversion due to construction and emergencies. Overview of typical applicants, reviewers, and approvers.

Continuation of TDS Fundamentals: Basic sections of TDS, identification of detour roadways, differences between temporary and long-term diversions, and the best time for diversion (daytime versus nighttime). Discussion on traffic congestion, incidents, and factors affecting safety and reliability.

  • Continuation of TDS Fundamentals: Preparing a TDS, including comparing traffic volume for diversion versus existing roadway traffic volume. Methods of traffic data collection, and detailed examination of the sections of a TDS.
  • Continuation of TDS Fundamentals: Determining and calculating traffic diversion impacts. Examination of software used for evaluation.
  • Project: Application of concepts based on delivered lectures.

The course will take place on Saturdays and Sundays for one week online, with a Certificate of Completion provided upon completion of the course.
