What is Federal Work Study?

Federal Work-Study is a federally funded program to assist students with financial needs in finding part-time employment on or off campus. Through FWS, eligible students can work in various positions within the college community and with approved off-campus employers. These positions are tailored to complement the student's academic and career goals, enabling them to gain relevant experience in their chosen field of study.

 

Student Employment

Part-time employment is a valuable asset, no matter where a student is employed. Part-time student employment provides earnings to offset educational expenses and offers students experiences not available in the classroom.

Students who work part-time usually finish their education in the same time frame as those who do not and experience equal or increased scholastic success. Work experience often puts student employees ahead in the job market after graduation and can provide valuable future career contacts. Employment also gives a student a chance to put into practice theories learned in the classroom and an opportunity to acquire marketable skills.

 

How to participate in Federal Work Study

To be considered for the Federal Work-Study program, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Must show documented financial need every year by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Go to studentaid.gov to apply.
  • Must complete a FWS application.
  • Must be a US Citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Must be enrolled at least part-time (6 credits) in the upcoming year.
  • Must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  • Students can work 10-20 hours per week.

Important note:
Please note that the availability of Federal Work Study positions is limited and dependent on funding allocations. Therefore, students must apply early and actively search for suitable employment opportunities.

Steps to Obtaining Employment

  1. Complete the Federal Work Study Application.
  2. Interview Process - the FWS coordinator will contact you to set appointments with supervisors for job opportunities.
  3. Hiring Process - once you are hired, you will receive guidance on the process with paperwork and orientation.
