How to Request FWS Job Opportunities (For Department/Supervisors Only)

For Department/Supervisors Only

To post job opportunities for Federal Work Study (FWS) positions as a department supervisor, follow the steps below:

  1. Identify job openings: Determine the need for FWS positions within your department. Assess the tasks, projects, or responsibilities that can be assigned to eligible FWS students. Consider the skills, experience, and qualifications required for the positions you wish to fill.
  2. Consult the Financial Aid Office: Reach out to the Financial Aid Office to understand the guidelines and procedures for posting FWS job opportunities. They will provide you with the necessary information and any specific requirements.
  3. Prepare a job description: Create a detailed description outlining the responsibilities, qualifications, and desired skills for the FWS position. Clearly define the tasks, hours, and any specific requirements, such as knowledge of certain software programs or the ability to handle customer inquiries.
  4. Determine wage and work hours: Consult with the Financial Aid Office to determine the appropriate wage rate for the FWS position. Ensure the wage complies with federal regulations. Determine the number of hours the position will require per week and any scheduling preferences or restrictions.
  5. Advertise the position: After completing the Job Opportunities Request Form, the job openings will be promptly advertised on the FWS Job Board.

Remember to maintain open communication with the Financial Aid Office throughout the process and adhere to any guidelines or reporting requirements they may have. By effectively posting FWS job opportunities, you can provide valuable employment experiences to students while fulfilling your department’s needs.

Supervisor Role

As a supervisor, you can enrich student employees’ college experience by guiding them in developing a strong work ethic and leadership experience that will be useful after graduation. Your work is vital to developing ethical and responsible leaders, empowered to engage in a diverse and changing world.  I encourage you to contact the Financial Aid office and Human Resources or consult the Supervisor guide when you need additional information or guidance.

Supervisor Responsibility

One of the challenging aspects of FWS supervision is balancing the special needs of students as employees with ongoing departmental work needs. Supervisors must be flexible with student work schedules, particularly during exams and extracurricular activities. We must always remember that a student’s primary purpose for being at HCCC is their education.

At the same time, students must treat their FWS job as a real job. The Supervisors must foster this attitude. It is essential that you, as their supervisor, ensure that they always have work to do.

One misconception about the Federal Work-Study Program is that students should be allowed to “study while working.” This is not the program’s objective; students should not be paid for studying. Ideally, a student’s work will have direct or indirect educational value.

FWS performance – Each year, you will be asked to complete an evaluation of your FWS student’s performance.  A form will be provided to you for each one of your students.

More information about supervisor responsibilities can be found in the guide.
