The option in Addictions Counseling provides students with the competencies needed to fulfill the educational requirements to become a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Domains of competencies include Assessment, Counseling, Case Management, Client Education, and Professional Responsibility. Through the program's curricular design, students develop an understanding of addictions, gain knowledge of the fundamental effects of addiction on the abuser and families as well as the biopsychosocial impacts of use. Students learn various counseling skills and then demonstrate them in fieldwork. Upon completion of this program, graduates have fulfilled the educational requirements to become a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Students begin to fulfill the 3000 hours of required related work experience while in the program. Students are able to find employment at Substance Abuse facilities with this degree. The proposed option in Addictions Counseling also prepares graduates for transfer to a senior institution to complete a baccalaureate degree in Human Services/Social Work or related field.
